For this shift series, I’m revisiting ideas about manipulating grids and surfaces, particularly via drawing. I’m interested in the ways a simple Cartesian grid can be warped to create movement and dimensionality, and how repeated segments can build up a form.

In this drawing, a 3” x 8” gridded rectangle is shifted and stretched along the diagonal. Like most work I make, I think the drawing can work in all orientations. When displayed as in the image or flipped upside down, the diagonals move upward. When turned vertically, the diagonals trend downward in a negative slope. In my studio, I often find myself flipping drawings and paintings around depending upon what feels right in that moment.
